Mirror Grinding Machine

My Mirror Grinding Machine. For a long time I've wanted to build a machine for grinding telescope mirrors. Dennis Rech's M-o-M designs finally inspired me to just get up and do it. Over the years, I'd been collecting motors, gear boxes, pulleys, etc. Most of them came from industrial junk yards. To use these parts, I had to modify some of Dennis' plans. How I did it is described below. This machine is the result. It is capable of grinding up to 20" telescope mirrors…Making a homemade mirror grinding machine - ATM,,06.03.2006· I was preparing to try and build an automated overarm but Gordon said it could be much simpler. Gordon will know more about the math for different mirrors and different sizes. I recall for mine it was about a 70% tool diameter. The bucket Gordon used to make the tile tool was 8 15/16", 70% of 12.5" ends up at 8 3/4". Looking back at my notes I used the tile tool primarily at the 70% zone of the mirror. The tile tool was centered at 4 3/8" out from the center of the mirror…Mirror grinding machine construction log - James Crombie, suited to building a mirror grinder with. The machine contained a large speed reducer (47-1 ratio), a variable speed mechanism, motor mount and tachometer. the frame was too small to be able to fit the over-arm drive in so I left it. I built another mirror grinding machine (out of welded angle iron) to work on the mirror, but never used it. In mid-2008 the desire to finish the 12.5 inch mirror hit again - this time with a vengeance. I had this urge to not only finish that mirror, but eventually grind something even larger. So with inspiration flowing, I started designing a radical new mirror grinding machine that would run under complete computer control.
